Cisco today announced that it has beefed up its 880 Series Integrated Services Router by adding support for 3G. The
new feature is called 3G Mobility and Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST) -- a mouthful that means the 880 can now failover to a 3G wireless WAN connection if it has access to one.

Cisco continues to combine technology and sports for a winning public relations onslaught. During a press conference held over TelePresence on Friday, NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson declared his love for Cisco's videoconferencing technology, which he said will save his company, the Magic Johnson Foundation, "millions of dollars and millions of man hours" over time.

A researcher says product tests
indicate that adding security functions into your Cisco network can kill network performance. NSS Labs will publish its findings about firewalls, IPS and UTM early next year, but NSS Labs CEO Vik Phatak says there are clearly performance drawbacks to using the Cisco security functions in routers and switches.

Wednesday. The company slightly beat Wall Street's expectation by reporting an 8% increase in revenue to $10.3 billion. Non-GAAP net income was $2.5 billion, or 42 cents a share, bettering analyst's expectation of 39 cents a share.

Cisco increased its equity stake in VMware to the tune of $13.3 million. The 500 shares of VMware Class A
common stock are being purchased from Intel, and will help to increase Cisco's equity share of VMware to 1.7%. Cisco CEO John Chambers in June said Cisco was not interesting in owning VMware, which is 84% owned by EMC.
